Construction Technology 3 (QSB 2514) (Semester 4)

Lecturer for this subject is Mr. Chiew Seng Khoon. I have learned to illustrate most aspects of elementary construction with an insight into the techniques applied in large-scale development using standard steel sections and reinforced concrete. Also, I have learned to apply the methods, materials, equipment and systems used for the construction of tall buildings and apply industrial methods which are mainly composed of factory produced components to a module or standard increment.

The assessment of the student overall performance comprise of two assignments and one final examination. Total marks is 100%.

The first assignment is a mid-term test that covered from Week 1 to Week 2. The second assignment is a group assignment where a group of 5 students are required to visit a building site to observe any one construction process related to the Industrialised Building System practiced in Malaysia. A detail brief and rubric marking scheme of this assignment given by the lecturer as a guide to this assignment.

Project Management (QSB 2423) (Semester 4)

The lecturer for this subject is Mr. Leong Boon Tik. I have learned to explain and understand the strategies for the execution of the development process in response to the client's objectives and able to define project characteristics, objectives, organization and success. Also, I am able to identify the possible risk that a project manager may face during the process of development, can differentiate between required skill to perform project management and construction management in the development process, list a board knowledge of the professional roles, duties and responsibilities of the Project Manager, explain the range and the scope of activities of the Project Manager within the development process and describe a framework of personal qualities needed by the Project Manager in discharging his/her duties.

The assessment of the student overall performance comprise of two assignments and one final examination. The total marks is 100%.

The first assignment is an individual assignment where I need to create a work breakdown structure and gantt chart using Microsoft Project. The second assignment is a group assignment where a group of student need to do a project proposal report.

This subject gives me a complete guide on managing a project and identify some factors, for example life-cycle cost,  that can affect a project.

Estimating (QSB 2134) (Semester 4)

There are two lecturers for this subject, they are Sr Eddie Lim and Ms. Dianne Kok. I have learned to list the various components of construction project attributing cost and I am able to explain the terminology related to the preparation of unit rates, adopt a systematic approach to pricing unit rate in the measured works section of Bills of Quantities, analyse various cost elements in building up the total cost of a building project, prioritise the importance of various factors affecting the level of costing to generate effective skills in tendering techniques and implement cost control procedures to control alternatives to make well-reasoned recommendations.

The assessment of the student overall performance comprise of two assignments and one final examination. Total marks is 100%.

The first assignment is a group of 5 students where we have to prepare a seminar for the other students. First, we have to prepare presentation slides on a specified topic. After the presentation, we have to tutor small group of students on the question given by lecturer. The second assignment is also a group assignment where we need to collect the tender documents from our lecturer and price it. We are required to request for quotation from a supplier regarding the material cost. After we submitted our tender documents, the lecturer will list down the three lowest tenderer and shortlist for interview. Meanwhile, the others who does not make it to the list proceed to the other interview.

This subject is a clear introduction of the role of contractor QS. I get a closer look on the tendering process. Besides that, time management is very important as the given dateline is short. Also, the coursework improve my communication skill in various settings and modes.

Professional Practice 1 (QSB 2615) (Semester 4)

The lecturer for this subject is Sr Chang Khong Thong. I have learned to define the qualifications (academic and professional) required of a Quantity surveyor, its Professional Institution and Board, able to describe the duties of Quantity surveyor, also identify the roles of various parties involved in the building team and their construction contracts and contractual relationship and evaluate the array of construction contracts between the client and the main contractor. The assessment of the student overall performance comprise of one individual assignment, one mid-term test and final examination. The total marks is 100%.

The first assignment is mid-term test. The second assignment is an individual assignment where I am required to prepare a project proposal for procurement arrangements to a client.

This subject is an introduction to the real practice. Also, it shows me the real example of a problem that involved in a project, for example a situation that disobey the form of contract that being used. Thus, this can improve my problem solving skills.

Measurement 4 (QSB 2124) (Semester 4)

In Measurement 4, I have learned to produce measurement for external works, piling works and renovation and demolition works. The lecturer that guides me for this subject is Sr Chang Khong Thong. Measurement for external works includes sewerage reticulation, surface water drainage, roads and pavements and water reticulation. The assessment of the student overall performance comprise of one group assignment, Elemental Cost Analysis(ECA) workshop, one mid-term test and final examination. The total marks is 100%.

The coursework consists of three assignments. The first assignment is a group project consists of 5 members in a group to measure all elements in the task allocation provided by lecturer including Bills of Quantities and prepare a set of tender documents to calling for tender. The second assignment is a one hour mid-term test. The third assignment is an Elemental Cost Analysis(ECA) workshop. A group of 8 students prepare detail cost analysis of the selected building project to write down in ECA report.

This is a good preparation for the 6-months internship. I am able to apply all the theories into professional practice. Learn independently and manage myself, for example time management. Also, I learn to solve problem in practice to be self-reliant. Furthermore, I have experienced to present my tender documents that is assessed by several lecturers, one in ECA workshop and another one is for the first assignment. This allow me to practice on communication skills in various modes and settings.
