Construction Law (QSB 4414) (Semester 6)

The lecturer for this subject is Sr Lim Sek Cheon. Total credit hours is 4.The assessment plan is divided into five components that are Coursework 1-Seminar, Mid-Term Test, Coursework 2-Loss and Expense Assessment, Final Examination and TGC Portfolio. Each component except TGC Portfolio sums up assessment weightage to 100%.

For Coursework 1-Seminar, this assessment is in a form of seminar. This seminar will form 15% of the final assessment. During week 2 to 13, a seminar will be carried out during the tutorial session and a group will be nominated. Each seminar leader will be given a law topic a week before the seminar for preparation. Each seminar leader will be given approximately 15 minutes to present their topic. The presentation can be in any format. Each member of the seminar leader is encouraged to present during the seminar. After the presentation, the seminar leader is required to ask two questions for discussion and the class is required to ask at least one question to the seminar leader. The seminar leader shall cover the following for the theory question presentation; explain the question and explain the details of relevant theories and concepts related to the question using case laws. For Coursework 2-Loss and Expense Assessment, the students will form a group to act as consultants assessing a contractor’s application for loss and expense claim. The group will assess the applications based on the conditions of contract and principles of laws relating to remedies and damages due to breach of contract. For Mid-Term Test, it is designed to assess the ability of the students in identifying, analysing and applying the principles of construction law in different situations. For Final Examination, it is designed to assess the ability of the students in identifying, analysing and applying
the principles of construction law in different situations, the applicable laws and statutes.

At the end of the semester, I am able to identify, explain and distinguish the various laws related to the construction industry including land law and construction statutes by demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the principles in law, conditions of contract and the applicable statutes. Plus, able to analyze, interpret and apply this knowledge on the principles of law in administration of contracts and contractual claims including providing evidence of reasoned advice in relation to contractual claims and interpretation of any discrepancies of various contract documents. Also, able to take appropriate methods of dispute resolution for different situations arising from construction contract.
